The In-Breath & Out-Breath of Original Artwork

In a studio art class we may come across the idea raised by a student that inspiration from other artists is not always a positive thing. The argument is that there is benefit in creating from a pure and original point of view, without the influence from the outside world; something that is truly authentic and of our own expression.

Firstly, this perspective is always welcomed, as it points to an individual who cares about expressing their truth and most importantly finding their own voice. Secondly, this statement brings an opportunity to present the other side of that argument, where knowledge and understanding of the work of others enhances, informs and contextualises our own work. In addition, not being exposed to information doesn’t necessarily make us more original, as we are already exposed to enough information where our originality has already been influenced.

Another point to make is that our personal point of view holds such strong disposition that we need not worry about losing it or displacing it.. It is part of who we are and by exploring similar perspectives it can only be enhanced, matured and strengthened. In that way, it is a good idea to take time to open up and receive ideas, techniques and methods, visit the history of art and our contemporaries, but in the end of the day we are always eager go back to our creative centre and fully express…
